Space-Time Variations in Job Types: A Tale of “Three Europes”

This article, which draws on three waves (2005, 2010, 2015) of the European Working Conditions Survey, examines nature and prevalence different job types in a representative sample employees 30 countries (N = 59,839) investigates their change over time. Using self-organizing map, sampled were first grouped into seven types, based similar features following dimensions: physical environment, work intensity, working time quality, social skill discretion, earnings prospects. Subsequently, resulting validated by linear regression models outcomes that are indicative such as well-being satisfaction. Finally, space-time variations distribution explored using two-stage formulation model contrasted universalistic institutional explanations change. Results indicate clusters could be distinguished, only partially fit existing regime classifications: i) Northern cluster (Scandinavian countries); ii) Central Western (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Estonia, but also UK, Ireland Malta); iii) Southern Eastern (Mediterranean including Cyprus Turkey, former socialist EU member states, Latvia, Lithuania). These present specific patterns more closely related to national economic situation employment structure than variation.
